Students from Piscataway, NJ and Los Angeles Win Inaugural Scholarships

September 6, 2019 - By Hal Levy - read

NEW YORK, September 6 Incoming Rutgers freshman Mohammed Ahmed, and postbaccalaureate Monica Renoj of Charles R. Drew University in Los Angeles, have been awarded’s first-ever Insurance Scholarships. operates a nationally recognized insurance comparison website.

Mohammed and Monica were selected from dozens of competitive applicants across 10 states who applied online to receive the inaugural scholarship awards. Ultimately, their essays, background, and dedication to public health stood out to the entire team.

“Congratulations to these two outstanding students!” says co-founder Jeff Smedsrud. “Since they’ve already met the challenge of getting health insurance as a student, we know their future is exceptionally bright.”

Scholarships are available to students who are at landmark ages for getting health insurance (either turning 26 or experiencing ACA open enrollment for the first time). Scholarship applicants were asked to discuss their experiences with health insurance.

Mohammed wrote about treatment for his broken arm following an injury in gym class. Over the past 4 years, Mohammed has interned at multiple doctor’s offices, volunteered at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, and qualified for the Rutgers Oncology Olympiad. “I was surprised to see all the different types of insurance programs available for people to choose from,” Mohammed wrote.

Mohammed is well on his way to becoming a doctor, having graduated from Middlesex County Academy of Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences in spring 2019. He plans to enroll in the Rutgers University Honors Program in the fall semester.

Monica wrote about dealing with difficult rules and deadlines after taking on the responsibility of health insurance for her family; and how health insurance could be made easier for people in their 20s. At college, she has served on international medical volunteer brigades.

Monica attends Charles R. Drew University, a nonprofit university committed to cultivating health professionals who are dedicated to health equity for underserved populations. “At the core of my goal to be a doctor,” she said, “is a sense of duty towards underserved communities that need health services the most.”
