Dates for 2015-2016 Health Insurance Open Enrollment Announced

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) today announced the dates for the 2015-2016 open enrollment season, one day after succumbing to pressure and extending the 2015 deadline for millions of Americans unaware of the tax penalties they face being uninsured.

In a letter to the insurers in the federally-facilitated marketplace, CMS stated that the 2015-2016 open enrollment period to purchase a health insurance plan will run from November 1, 2015 until January 31, 2016. While the 2015-2016 dates had not been officially announced on healthcare.gov, it was widely rumored the open enrollment season would begin in October. The one-time extension CMS is now offering on healthcare.gov to those who did not realize they would have to pay a tax penalty will run from March 15 to April 30, 2015. Many states are lining up to follow suit.

HealthCare.com will report more on the current deadline extension as more states decide to join in.

My wife has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is in hospital 2.5 hours from home. The last day of enrollment is tomorrow. Is there any way to get an extension

John, the first deadline for health insurance enrollment is December 15, 2015, but it is not the last deadline. You have until January 31, 2016 to get enrolled. We do recommend you enroll in a healthcare plan as soon as possible so you do not experience a gap in coverage. If you cannot enroll by Dec. 15 for Jan. 1 coverage, you have until Jan. 15 to sign up for coverage effective Feb. 1, and Jan. 31 for March 1, 2016 coverage.
